About this platform

The BMW E90 platform covers the 3 Series produced from roughly 2005 to 2012 — saloon (E90), touring (E91), coupé (E92) and convertible (E93). It spans a wide engine range: naturally aspirated and direct-injection petrols (N46, N52, N53), forced-induction petrols (N54, N55), and diesels from the M47 through to the N47 common-rail family. This breadth is the first diagnostic variable: confirm the exact engine and DME/DDE version before testing, because the same symptom has a different evidence path on an N52 than on an N55.

Diagnostic approach

The E90 follows the same evidence-driven sequence as any BMW, with platform-specific modules:

  1. Complaint — capture the exact symptom and the condition (cold/hot, load, duration)
  2. Vehicle identity — confirm model year, engine code, DME/DDE part number, VO (coding data)
  3. Fault memory — read all modules, not just the DME
  4. Evidence — freeze frames, ISTA measurement values, scope, electrical tests
  5. Differential diagnosis — rank hypotheses by the evidence
  6. Next-best-test — the test that most changes probability
  7. Confirmed cause — act only on strong, confirmatory evidence
  8. Repair
  9. Verification — reproduce the original condition (cold start, hot soak, road load)

Common diagnostic systems

On the E90 the systems that generate the most workshop diagnostic time are: engine management (DME/DDE — injection, rail pressure, boost, VANOS, sensors), the Car Access System (CAS — immobiliser, start authorisation, terminal-15), the Footwell Module / Karosserie-Gateway-Module / Junction Box Electronics (FRM/KGM/JBE — body, lighting, power distribution), DSC/ABS, and the charging system with IBS and BSD alternator communication.

Engine-management considerations

E90 engine management splits by family. Naturally aspirated N52 cars fail differently from direct-injection N53/N54/N55 cars. On N54/N55, high-pressure fuel and injector faults dominate the fault memory; on N52, air-path (DISA, PCV) and valvetronic-less conventional VANOS issues appear. On the N47 diesel, timing-chain and HPFP faults are the high-stakes items. Never assume the engine family from the badge — read the DME identification and the VO before testing.

Power-supply considerations

The E90 power distribution runs through the JBE (junction box) and, on some builds, a separate fuse/relay distribution. A "random" electrical symptom — flickering, module reset, no-crank, intermittent no-start — is often a supply or ground problem at the JBE or battery before it is a module fault. Confirm battery condition, IBS data, and the relevant fuse/ground before condemning a module. See the voltage-drop and battery-voltage guides.

CAS / DME / DDE — start authorisation

The E90 uses CAS (CAS2/CAS3 depending on build) for immobiliser, start authorisation and terminal-15 wake-up. A no-start that cranks but does not fire frequently starts at the CAS or EWS alignment, not at fuel. Confirm:

  • Starter cranks? → if no: CAS / EWS / terminal-50 / starter / battery
  • CAS start authorisation OK? → key, CAS-DME alignment
  • Terminal-15 reaches DME/DDE? → power distribution, wake-up
  • Then move to fuel pressure, injector command, crank/cam sync

Confirming the immobiliser path first prevents hours of fuel-system misdiagnosis.

CAN / network considerations

The E90 uses K-CAN (body, lower speed) and PT-CAN (powertrain, higher speed), with a gateway. Communication faults (U-codes, "no communication with module") point to bus, gateway, or module power/ground — not to the system the module controls. Confirm the module's power and ground first; only then suspect the bus or the module itself. CAN-bus diagnostics and the scope CAN guide apply directly.

DSC / ABS interaction

DSC faults on the E90 can flag through wheel-speed sensor plausibility, steering-angle sensor, or pressure sensor faults, and can restrict output (reduced power, limp). Separate a genuine DSC hydraulic/sensor fault from a network-shared-data fault by checking which modules agree on the suspect value.

Transmission diagnostics

Manual and automatic (GA6, and on later/diesel builds GA8/8HP) transmissions appear. A "transmission" complaint is often a mechatronic, electrical, or fluid-condition issue rather than a hard mechanical failure — and on the E90 a transmission restriction can be induced by DSC or DME derate. Read the EGS module and cross-check against DME/DSC state before condemning the gearbox.

Live-data strategy

E90 live data is structured around requested (soll) versus actual (ist). The diagnostic value lives in the gap:

  • Requested rail pressure vs actual → fuel system
  • Requested boost vs actual → turbo / charge air
  • Requested injection quantity vs actual → injector balance
  • Requested cam phase vs actual → VANOS / Valvetronic (where fitted)

Always capture requested-and-actual pairs under the fault condition. Looking at actual values alone hides the disagreement that is the evidence.

Electrical testing strategy

Use voltage-drop testing on supply and ground paths, 5V-reference integrity for shared-sensor DTCs, and ground-testing for the multiple ground points distributed around the body. A single shorted sensor pulling down a shared 5V reference will set multiple-sensor DTCs simultaneously — disconnect-and-observe isolates the offender.

Oscilloscope opportunities

Crank and cam signals (especially on N47/N54/N55), CAN-bus integrity, and alternator BSD where applicable. RPM data in live values does not prove crank-signal integrity — scope the signal when the fault is intermittent or thermal.

Common symptom categories

No-start / long crank, misfire / rough idle, reduced power / limp, underboost, charging/battery, and communication faults. Each has a platform-specific evidence path — follow the relevant symptom guide, then apply E90 module context.

Relevant DTC relationships

  • P0087 / P0191 — rail pressure (N54/N55/N47)
  • P0171 / P0172 — lean/rich (PCV, MAF, coolant sensor)
  • P0299 — underboost (wastegate, charge air)
  • P0300 — misfire (VANOS, coil, injector, carbon)
  • P0335 / P0340 — crank / cam (thermal, correlation)
  • P0562 — voltage low (IBS, BSD, registration)
  • P0700 — EGS request

Evidence-driven test sequence (example — E90 long crank / no-start)

  1. Confirm battery, terminals, IBS → voltage-drop the main paths
  2. CAS start authorisation and terminal-15 → DME wake-up
  3. Crank and cam sync (scope if intermittent)
  4. Low-pressure fuel supply → then high-pressure rail requested vs actual
  5. Injector command and balance
  6. Only then condemn a component — and verify by reproduction
