The complaint, precisely

"BMW cranks but won't start" is the complaint — but the diagnosis only begins when you split it. Does the starter crank at normal speed? Is it a cold no-start, a hot no-start, or a first-start-after-sitting? Is it after a short hot soak? The evidence path for a cold diesel no-start differs from a hot petrol restart, and both differ from an intermittent no-start that only fails when warm. Capture the exact condition before opening a test plan.

The BMW-specific no-start sequence

A BMW that cranks but will not fire is tested in a fixed order — not by guessing fuel first:

  1. Cranking quality — battery, terminals, starter, grounds. A slow crank itself prevents a diesel from reaching rail-pressure enablement.
  2. Engine-speed signal — crank and cam synchronisation. The DME/DDE will not enable injection without it.
  3. DME/DDE communication — terminal-15, wake-up, power/ground, PT-CAN.
  4. Start authorisation — CAS / FEM / BDC immobiliser enable and DME/DDE start permission.
  5. Fuel supply — low-pressure supply, then high-pressure (common-rail diesel / direct-injection petrol).
  6. Ignition (petrol) — coil command and spark.
  7. Injector command — injection enable and pulse.
  8. Compression / mechanical timing — the last resort, not the first.

Cranking quality first

Low cranking voltage derates the DME/DDE directly and prevents rail-pressure build on diesels. Confirm battery state, terminal integrity, and main grounds with voltage-drop testing before any fuel reasoning. A diesel BMW that cranks slowly will not build rail pressure and will not start — that is a battery/ground/starter fault, not a fuel fault.

Engine-speed signal and synchronisation

The DME/DDE cannot enable injection until crank and cam are synchronised. Loss of sync keeps requested rail pressure at zero and inhibits injection. P0335/P0340/P0191-class codes may or may not set depending on the failure mode. Scope the crank and cam signals under the fault condition — RPM in live data does not prove signal integrity, especially for thermal intermittent faults. See the crank-sensor scope guide.

DME/DDE communication

"No communication with DME/DDE" points to DME/DDE power/ground, PT-CAN, or the gateway — not to the fuel or ignition system. Confirm terminal-15, DME/DDE power and ground, and PT-CAN integrity before condemning the controller.

Start authorisation — CAS / FEM / BDC

BMW immobiliser/start-authorisation architecture changed across generations: CAS (CAS2/CAS3 on E-series), and FEM/BDC on F-series and later. The DME/DDE will not enable injection unless it receives a valid start-permission message. A no-start that cranks but never fires frequently starts at the immobiliser alignment, not at fuel. Confirm:

  • CAS / FEM / BDC start authorisation OK? — key recognition, ISN/alignment
  • Start-permission message reaching DME/DDE? — CAN communication
  • Then move to fuel pressure, injector command, crank/cam sync

Confirming the authorisation path first prevents hours of fuel-system misdiagnosis. This is legitimate repair diagnosis — not immobiliser bypass or security defeat.

Fuel supply and common-rail pressure

Confirm low-pressure supply (pump, filter, lines) before high-pressure reasoning. On common-rail diesels (M57, N47) and direct-injection petrols (N55, N20), compare rail pressure requested vs actual during cranking. If requested rail pressure stays at zero, the DME/DDE is not commanding start pressure — points to authorisation, crank/cam sync, or supply, not to the high-pressure pump. Do not state a universal start rail-pressure threshold — compare actual to the DDE/DME's requested value and the verified start-enablement specification for the exact variant. See the low fuel rail pressure guide.

Ignition and injector command (petrol)

On petrol BMWs (N55, N20), confirm coil command and injector pulse at the failing cylinder. A no-start with good crank/cam sync, good authorisation, and good rail pressure points to injector command or ignition — not to fuel pressure.

Compression and mechanical timing

Only after electrical, signal, authorisation, and fuel paths are confirmed does mechanical timing and compression enter the differential. A single mechanical-timing fault is far rarer than the supply/signal/authorisation faults above — do not jump to it.

ISTA vehicle test

Run the ISTA vehicle test and read all modules, not just the DME/DDE. ISTA structures the test plan around the complaint and stored DTCs; use it as the ordered test source, but apply evidence discipline — capture requested-vs-actual, scope intermittent signals, and confirm supply/ground before condemning expensive parts.

Next-best-test logic

The next-best-test is the test that most changes the probability of the leading hypothesis — not the easiest test. If the leading hypothesis is "loss of crank signal," the next-best-test is the scope, not a fuel-pressure gauge. Update the ranked hypotheses after every test.

Verification after repair

Reproduce the original fault condition after repair: cold start, hot soak, short hot-soak restart. Clear and re-read all modules. A no-start that does not reproduce under the original condition is not verified fixed.
