About this platform

The BMW E70 is the X5 produced from roughly 2006 to 2013. It is a heavy SUV, so it carries diesel (M57, later N57 common-rail) and petrol (N55, and earlier N62 V8) drivelines, the VTG transfer box, and a DSC/ABS system sized for the mass. The diagnostic weight on the E70 is disproportionately diesel (rail pressure, injectors, DPF, glow), transmission/transfer-box, and charge/voltage — because the vehicle loads every system harder than a saloon.

Diagnostic approach

  1. Complaint — exact symptom and the load/temperature condition (SUV faults are load- and heat-sensitive)
  2. Vehicle identity — model year, engine (M57/N57/N55/N62), DME/DDE version, VO
  3. Fault memory — all modules
  4. Evidence — freeze frames, ISTA measurement values, scope, electrical tests
  5. Differential diagnosis — rank by evidence
  6. Next-best-test — most probability-changing
  7. Confirmed cause — strong evidence only
  8. Repair
  9. Verification — reproduce under load and heat

Common diagnostic systems

E70 high-frequency systems: diesel engine management (DDE — rail pressure, injectors, DPF, glow, EGR), petrol engine management (DME — N55 HPFP/injector/VANOS; N62 coolant/V8-specific), CAS start authorisation, FRM/JBE body, DSC/ABS, VTG transfer box, and the charging system. SUVs stress charge and ground paths — battery and ground integrity underpin almost every E70 diagnosis.

Engine-management considerations

  • M57 / N57 diesel — rail pressure (requested vs actual), injector correction, DPF loading/soot, glow system, EGR/MAF plausibility. The N57 timing chain is the high-stakes mechanical item.
  • N55 petrol — HPFP, injectors, wastegate, valvetronic.
  • N62 V8 — coolant, valvetronic-less, and cooling-pipe / valley issues.

Confirm the engine and DME/DDE part number before testing — the same symptom has a different evidence path on an M57 than on an N57.

Power-supply considerations

The E70 loads its battery and grounds harder than a saloon. A "random" electrical symptom, intermittent no-crank, or module reset is frequently a battery/ground issue before it is a module fault. Confirm battery condition, IBS data, main ground points, and voltage-drop the heavy paths first. See voltage-drop and battery-voltage guides.

CAS / DME / DDE — start authorisation

E70 no-start sequence:

  1. Starter cranks? → no: CAS / terminal-50 / starter / battery / grounds
  2. CAS start authorisation and key
  3. Terminal-15 / DME-DDE wake-up
  4. (Diesel) glow system and cranking rail pressure build
  5. Then injector command and crank/cam sync

A diesel E70 that cranks long before firing is often a glow / rail-pressure / crank-signal issue, not the starter.

CAN / network considerations

K-CAN and PT-CAN with a gateway. Communication faults (U-codes, "no communication") point to bus, gateway, or module power/ground — not the controlled system. Confirm module power and ground first. CAN-bus and scope CAN guides apply.

DSC / ABS and VTG interaction

On the E70, DSC and the VTG transfer box interact — a VTG or xDrive derate can present as a drivetrain warning that looks engine-side. Read the VTG (transfer-box) module and cross-check against DSC and DME before condemning engine or transmission.

Transmission diagnostics

The E70 uses the 6HP and later 8HP. "Gearbox" warnings are often mechatronic, electrical, fluid, or DME/DSC/VTG-induced derates. Read the EGS, cross-check DME/DSC/VTG state, before condemning the box.

Live-data strategy

Requested-vs-actual, with diesel-specific additions:

  • Requested rail pressure vs actual (critical on M57/N57)
  • Requested boost vs actual
  • Injector correction quantities (diesel balance)
  • DPF soot loading and differential pressure (where relevant)
  • Battery voltage and alternator output / BSD

Capture under the fault condition — E70 faults are load- and heat-dependent.

Electrical testing strategy

Voltage-drop the heavy supply/ground paths; 5V-reference integrity for shared-sensor DTCs; ground testing at the multiple body grounds. SUVs corrode grounds — check physical integrity, not just continuity.

Oscilloscope opportunities

Crank sensor (N57 especially — timing-chain and signal integrity), CAN integrity, alternator/BSD. Diesel crank-signal intermittents are common — scope when the fault is heat-related.

Common symptom categories

No-start / long crank (diesel glow and rail), reduced power / limp (DME/DSC/VTG derate), underboost, charging/battery, DPF/soot, communication faults.

Relevant DTC relationships

  • P0087 / P0191 — rail pressure (M57/N57/N55)
  • P0299 — underboost
  • P0300 — misfire (diesel injector, petrol coil/injector)
  • P0335 — crank sensor (N57 thermal)
  • P0562 — voltage low (IBS, BSD, grounds)
  • P0700 — EGS / VTG derate

Evidence-driven test sequence (example — E70 diesel long crank)

  1. Battery, terminals, main grounds → voltage-drop
  2. CAS authorisation, terminal-15, DDE wake-up
  3. Glow system and cranking rail pressure requested vs actual
  4. Crank signal integrity (scope if heat-related)
  5. Injector correction quantities
  6. Only then condemn — verify by cold/hot reproduction
