BMW Misfire Diagnosis — Ignition, Injector, Air, Compression & Timing
BMW misfire diagnosis: single-cylinder vs random/multiple, ignition, injector/fuel, air leak, compression, timing, mechanical, swap-test strategy, cylinder contribution/misfire counters, fuel trims, relative compression, oscilloscope, DME evidence, why a fault code alone does not prove coil/injector failure. A fault code does not prove the coil or injector
A BMW misfire DTC (P0300-class, or cylinder-specific P0301–P0312) tells you which cylinder is misfiring — it does not tell you why. The code proves the cylinder is not contributing; the root (ignition, injector, air, compression, timing, mechanical) is the next test. Condemning a coil or injector on a code alone is the parts-cannon approach.

Single-cylinder vs random / multiple
The first split:
- Single cylinder (one P030x, one misfire counter climbing) — coil, injector, that cylinder's mechanical, that cylinder's wiring.
- Random / multiple (P0300, or several counters climbing together) — a system fault: fuel pressure, air path, sensor, Valvetronic/VANOS, fuel quality.
A single-cylinder misfire is almost never a high-pressure fuel pump fault; an HPFP fault affects all cylinders. A multiple-cylinder misfire is almost never a single coil.
The test order (single cylinder, petrol)
- Ignition — swap-test coils between cylinders. A misfire that follows the coil is the coil. Swap plugs if coils are integral. This is the fastest, cheapest test and resolves most single-cylinder petrol misfires.
- Injector — if the misfire stays on the cylinder after the coil swap, suspect the direct-injection injector. Pair with injector-correction values; persistent correction on that cylinder confirms the injector as the leading hypothesis.
- Compression / mechanical — if ignition and injector are cleared, a compression/leakdown test localises a mechanical cause (valve seating, compression, valvetrain on that cylinder).
Injector / fuel
On direct-injection BMWs (N55, N20), a leaking or over/under-delivering injector causes a single-cylinder misfire or a multiple-cylinder trim deviation. Pair injector-correction values with fuel trims: a single-cylinder correction with system trims in model points to that injector; system trims deviating points to a system fuel fault.
Air leak
An intake leak after the MAF admits unmetered air and drives a lean, random/multiple misfire with positive trims. A leak that opens under vacuum (idle/decel) is invisible at load. Pressure/smoke-test the intake; inspect the PCV.
Compression
A compression or leakdown test localises a mechanical cause. Relative compression via scope (starter current draw during cranking) is a fast screen for a weak cylinder without removing components.
Timing (VANOS / Valvetronic)
A VANOS or Valvetronic deviation can produce misfire and rough idle that look like ignition or injector but are valvetrain control. Compare requested-vs-actual cam phase and Valvetronic position. Scope crank/cam correlation when the misfire is intermittent or temperature-related. Do not provide unsupported timing specifications — compare the engine's actual correlation against the verified specification for the variant.
Mechanical
A single-cylinder misfire that clears ignition, injector, and compression points to deeper mechanical: valvetrain, valve seating, or that cylinder's integrity. A mechanical cause is the last hypothesis, not the first.
Swap-test strategy
The swap-test is the highest-value test on a single-cylinder petrol misfire: move the coil (and where practical the injector) to another cylinder and watch the misfire counter move with it. If the fault follows the part, the part is the fault; if it stays on the cylinder, the cylinder (or its wiring/connector) is the fault. This one test prevents most coil/injector misdiagnoses.
Cylinder contribution / misfire counters
Read the per-cylinder misfire counters and injector-correction values together. The counter tells you which cylinder; the correction tells you whether the DME is compensating rich or lean on that cylinder. Together they localise and direct the swap-test.
Fuel trims
Trims direct the fuel-vs-air question on a multiple-cylinder misfire: positive = lean (air leak, low fuel pressure, MAF error); negative = rich (leaky injector, high fuel pressure, MAF over-read). Pair trims with rail pressure before concluding.
Relative compression and oscilloscope
Relative compression (starter current draw, scope) screens for a weak cylinder fast. Scope crank/cam correlation for intermittent or temperature-related misfires — RPM and misfire counters do not prove valvetrain signal integrity.
DME evidence
Read the DME: misfire counters, injector correction, fuel trims, rail pressure requested-vs-actual, Valvetronic/VANOS requested-vs-actual. The DME's data, not the code alone, directs the test.
Verification
After repair, reproduce the condition that produced the misfire (cold, hot, load, idle), clear all modules, and confirm misfire counters stay at zero. A misfire that does not reproduce under the original condition is not verified fixed.
